The Myth of the “Self-Made” Entrepreneur: Build Your Support System
There is no such thing as a “self-made” success story. Behind every successful founder is a web of support—mentors, peers, and friends who offered advice, encouragement, and a shoulder to lean on.
Entrepreneurship is a lonely journey if you let it be. But you don’t have to do it alone. Intentionally building an entrepreneur support system is one of the most important investments you can make in your business and your well-being.
Your support system needs three key people:
- The Mentor: This is someone who is a few steps ahead of you. They can offer guidance, perspective, and help you avoid common pitfalls. This can be a formal coach or simply someone you admire whose content you study.
- The Mastermind: This is a small group of peers who are at a similar stage in business. You meet regularly to share wins, troubleshoot challenges, and hold each other accountable. This is your “board of directors.”
- The Friend: This is someone who loves you for you, not your business. They are the person you can call when you need to vent about a difficult client or celebrate a win, and they just get it—without needing to talk shop.
Who do you have in your corner? If you see a gap in your support system, your task is to seek out that connection. A nurtured business is a supported business.
Actionable Nurturing Step: Identify one of the three roles above that is missing in your life. This week, take one small step to find that person. Reach out to a peer to suggest a virtual coffee, or invest in a course from a mentor you admire.
