The ROI of Fun: Why the Importance of Play Isn’t Just for Kids

Your Business Needs You to Go Have Fun. Seriously.

As adults, and especially as ambitious entrepreneurs, we dismiss “play” as frivolous, unproductive, and something we don’t have time for. This is a massive strategic error.

Play is not the opposite of work; it is a vital part of the creative and problem-solving process. Play is any activity you engage in just for the joy of it, with no intended goal or outcome. It could be painting, hiking, playing a board game, dancing in your kitchen, or building a pillow fort with your kids.

The strategic importance of play cannot be overstated:

  • It Sparks Creativity: Play activates different parts of your brain. It allows for non-linear thinking and helps you make unexpected connections, which is the very definition of creativity. Your best business ideas often come when you’re not trying to “work.”
  • It Reduces Stress: Play is a powerful antidote to the chronic stress of entrepreneurship. It lowers cortisol levels and helps you access a state of flow and presence, giving your nervous system a much-needed break.
  • It’s a Problem-Solving Tool: When you’re stuck on a complex problem, the worst thing you can do is stare at your screen. Stepping away to engage in play allows your subconscious mind to work on the problem in the background. You’ll often return with a solution that seemed impossible before.

A nurtured business requires a nurtured founder, and a nurtured founder is one who has not forgotten how to play. Schedule fun into your week with the same seriousness you schedule client meetings.

Actionable Nurturing Step: What did you love to do for fun as a child? Pick one of those things and do it for 15 minutes this week, with no goal other than to enjoy it.
