Over the past couple of months, I have been posting about engaging your social media audience.  My last post on Who is My Ideal Customers on Social Media focused on how to develop your customer avatar.  I hope you read it and began the work on identifying the key elements of your customer.  This week I want to help you find where your audience is hanging out.

Now that you figured out who your ideal customer is you are ready to figure out where they are hanging out.  Let’s get started:

Step 1:  Let the Experts Do The Research

In January 2018 the Pew Research Center conducted a survey about social media use among US Adults.  This survey looked at what social media platforms Americans are hanging out on.  Check out the results here.

As you can see the results provides some key information for you to figure out where your audience may be hanging out.  The information is broken down into age groups, income,  ethnic group, and educational level.

Step 2:  Find Your Customer

Choose one of the platforms your customer is hanging out on and go find them.  Type in your keywords and see where they may be hanging out.  Once you identify a place go and hang out there.  Find out what type of content they are responding to, do they comment, like or share?  Are you able to provide value to them?  How are they responding to it?

Spend some time getting to know them on this platform.  After a while do some research on the other platforms.

Step 3:  Get to Know The Platform You Are Comfortable On

As you can see the Pew Research results gave you multiple social media platforms your customers are hanging out on.  You also spent some time getting to know them on a variety of platforms. Now is the time to choose the one platform you are comfortable us.  Once you choose the one platform you are comfortable with it’s time to get to know that platform.  You need to become an expert on how it works, what results will it bring your business.  Are you growing your fanbase? Increasing website traffic? Getting engagement?  What are the platforms policies?  How much time do you need to spend to get results?

It is important you just stick with one platform.  You don’t need to be everywhere if you are where your ideal customers are.  You just need to know how to engage with them on the platform and do the work to convert them to your list.

This simple three-step process will help you to be where you ideal social media audience is.  Now you can begin implementing some of the other tips I have provided.

So where are you going to be hanging out?  Leave a comment below to let me know.
